The landscape of dental practice has changed since the pandemic began. Instrument processing and the assurance of sterility is important in discussion with patients and staff. Using biological indicators (BI) ensures instruments are sterile and safe for use. Biological monitoring is the only way to verify sterility. This CE webinar will discuss OSHA standards, AAMI recommendations, and CDC infection control guidelines related to the instrument processing cycle focusing on sterilization and biological indicators. The types and recommended frequency of the use of BI will be discussed. The pros and cons of both in-office and mail-in biological monitoring will be discussed. Newsworthy breaches of infection control with tips to implement and avoid are discussed. A review of microbiology, disease transmission, and basic infection control principles is covered. This CE webinar offers timely education as well as helpful tips, checklists, and resources to empower participants to assess their level of compliance and make any necessary updates to their own office policies and procedures.

During this CE webinar, we will
• Identify the chain of infection and correct common pitfalls with infection control compliance related to sterilization and use of biological indicators (BI)
• Discuss various types of BI and recommended frequency of use
• Compare and contrast pros and cons of in-office versus mail-in biological monitoring
• Discuss various types of chemical indicators
• Differentiate between “recommendations” and “requirements” related to CDC Guidelines and OSHA Requirements related to the instrument processing cycle and biological monitoring
